Death-row Organ Donating

I am deciding to create a stakeholders map for the article on whether or not prisoners should be able to donate their organs or not before going through with the death penalty. I chose this topic for the fact that there are so many people that are impacted no matter the result. I personally believe that prisoners should be able to donate whichever organ they please and potentially help save a life rather than not being allowed to and those organs wasted. If we one day decide that this is a legal thing to do, many different outcomes could be the result. The simple answer is that the prisoners can now help save lives that would not have been saved before. However, the outcome could be much more complicated than that. Allowing prisoners to donate kidneys could lead to the ability to sell organs which would lead to a bidding war and an unfair advantage for some and disadvantage for others. Overall, I definitely believe that the good that comes from letting prisoners donate organs outweighs the bad. One of the difficult aspects to making this happen is to find doctors who are willing to operate on a living body. All in all, I strongly believe that allowing prisoners to donate organs before being put on death row is a good idea that will take some time to develop, but will ultimately help several who truly need it.

  1. This is a very interesting topic, but I feel that if the prisoners on death row choose to donate their kidneys then they should be allowed. The only problem would be that there should be an emphasis on the word DONATE. I don’t feel that they should have any opportunity to be paid for them, if they don’t want to donate their organs, than okay they don’t have to and it’s simply that easy. But another interesting thing I thought of with people being put to death mainly by lethal injection, does that affect the organs in any ways that would be harmful to transplant into another human? If the drug is lethal enough I would feel that it probably wouldn't be the best to transplant that person’s organs.

  2. I am signed up to be an organ donor in California and I honestly think that it is all positive things that come from someone being able to donate organs upon death to a person in need. Obviously though it should be under the donators consent if they want to donate.Your map looks really good and I like how you included details under the subtopics.

  3. I agree that prisoners should be able to donate their organs and don't see why people are against it. They should still be on death row and if they are put to the death penalty so be it, but they should be able to donate a organ before they are gone forever. The map you made is a good illustration of the people against it and for it.

  4. I agree that prisoners that are on death row should be allowed to donate their organs to save the life of another. You definitely brought up some good points for both sides of this debate which i feel is really going to make your opinion matter more. Allowing prisoners to donate their organs, i feel, would be like giving someone more deserving, who hasn't messed up their lives, the chance to live in place of the inmates. Im not sure why this isnt allowed already because who doesnt support saving lives? This is a really interesting topic and feel that the path youre headed is good and your final paper will be good as well.

  5. Your map shows different groups of the death row argument in a logical web somewhat clearly separated by where these groups stand. By having the prisoners, people who need an organ, and their families all on one side clearly shows that these groups all have a similar stance. However, having doctors on the bottom is a little confusing, since according to the map, doctors fall on both sides of the organ donation argument. It would've made more sense to place the pro-donating doctors on the top, rather than at the bottom, next to the doctors that are against donation organs. Although grouping them as doctors may seem convenient, it would be more effective to sort arguments and stakeholders in the map by for/against. You have some reasoning as to why they support or don't support organ donation, and this helps you easily demonstrate why groups are on a particular side of the argument. Overall, your map, along with the stakeholders you identified will help you write a pretty good essay.

For an example, you can check out my map, which shows I set up to show who's on which side of the argument:
