Reality Television and Well-Being of Participants Stakeholder Map

The blog I chose to do my essay/map on was “Should Reality TV Producers be Responsible for Participant Well-Being?” This specifically caught my attention due to the fact that I am currently an aspiring doctor. Health is a serious and important issue to me, and I thought it would be interesting to explore this side of reality television. Some serious things have happened to some participants and it’s important that this matter is addressed. I started off by opening the original article and reading it, and then following that by reading the blog posted written by the student. As I was doing this, I had a pencil and notebook by my side so I could record any stakeholders that came to mind as I was analyzing the two pieces of writing. Next, I made two lists of stakeholders for or against the subject and placed each under the appropriate column, leaving viewers in the middle of the two. I then constructed a venn-diagram correlating to my lists. In parentheses next to each item, I also put a very brief description of my reasoning. I left lawyers blank because it could go either way. There could be lawyers hired for the participant’s side or the company’s side. One of the most difficult parts in going about this assignment was trying to think of the last couple stakeholders and deciding which side of the venn-diagram I would place them on. In addition, deciding what type of map format I wanted to use was also an area that took some thought. Stakeholders such as doctors and viewers came to mind almost instantly, whereas others such as lawyers and media took a little bit of thinking. Depending on which viewpoint of the stakeholder you are looking at, they all for the most part could have gone on either side (for/against). Because of this, I placed them in the most common and logical side. I’m excited to further explore this topic because it sparks a big ethical debate. Many people are involved and every person is affected in some way. It is going to be interesting to see how each side weighs over the other.

  1. It's good that you chose something that interests you, it will be that much easier to write about a topic that actually intrigues you. I think that this is a very good perspective on the argument but I think you could go a little more in depth on the reasoning behind certain stakeholder's positions. The argument I chose was that involving the life support of Jahi McMath. It was easy to arrange in a spectrum because its a yes or no question so there are going to be some people with definite yes or no answers and then some people who are in the middle. You can see that in mine I gave the stakeholder's position then some more detailed positions involving reasons behind their opinion.

  2. As the original author of the blog post, I am particularly interested in this topic as well. You mapped out the differing sides to the argument extremely well, and the use of the Venn-diagram was particularly effective in this case. When you have 2 distinct sides to compare, those in favor of the producers or those in favor of the participants, it is best to accurately pinpoint the reasoning and motive for said sides. You accomplished that with the information in the parentheses. I also like how you included those not directly involved in the decision making (the viewers) as the center of the diagram, as that median of wanting interesting television but having general concern for the human rights and well-being of the participants. For an aspiring doctor like yourself, you chose a well-off topic.

  3. I liked your choice of a venn diagram because it allows for a "middle ground" in the debate. You seem very interested and informed in your topic, and I appreciated you adding an article at the end to give us more perspective. The topic I chose was more black and white but I feel that yours can go in so many directions that I'm pretty interested to see how you work with it in the project.

  4. Shayda, I was impressed on your expressed interest on this topic and your willingness to actively analyze the article. It was a good idea to use the method that you did when recording the stakeholders. Since you were actively taking notes as you read the article, you probably got a solid understanding of it and could therefore point out all of the stakeholders. For the map you created, I would also have used the Venn diagram. It is simple but accurately states the positions of the stakeholders.

  5. I really liked that you chose to focus more on the viewpoints of the stakeholders rather than on who they were. I think it's easier to decide who has a stake in each issue, but difficult to determine why they have this opinion. I'm feeling a little technologically in advanced because I wrote out an entire list but I don't know how to upload it to here. So, hopefully an explanation is good enough. I also decided to focus on the different opinions of stakeholders. Obviously those who are pro, see this sort of manipulation as a positive because they are able to increase their ratings and or profits. Those who view against it see the different issues among the ethics of manipulating the public. However, I did try to make a list of those would could be considered stakeholders. Those who were for it, I believe would be producers or those involved in the creation of the show, perhaps, naive viewers who don't understand they are being manipulated as well. Those who oppose would be more viewers who can tell that these scenarios are obviously scripted.

  6. I think it’s great that you chose a topic in which you have a strong opinion about and how it relates to what you want to do as a career. I found it really easy to understand your viewpoints because I chose to do the same article. The way you constructed your ideas into a venn diagram seems to be very effective. I liked how you included not only the stakeholders that are for and against the topic, but also those who are in between. I also think that adding the reasoning behind each stakeholder seemed to be extremely effective, especially for our first writing project.

  7. You definitely have an effective method in place for creating your stakeholder's map. I like the set up because it allows for an effective way to see the for, middle, and against viewpoints. I do not know if you did this somewhere else, but if you include more details for each subtopic under for, against, and middle, it will make the writing process a lot easier for when you start drafting.

  8. You did a good job on focusing on the stakeholders and their viewpoints. The Venn diagram was effective in establishing both sides of the argument. It is clear that this is a topic that you are considered with, so writing about the stakeholders on reality television shows should not be too difficult for you. If it were me, I would have probably used a chart, but a venn diagram is just as efficient. It is true that either side could be taken, and it all depends on the situation at hand.

  9. You seem very enthusiastic about this topic, which is nice because it makes your argument appear passionate and genuine. I strongly support your choice to use a Venn-diagram to present your argument. This map that you created was a rather simple method to display your perspective, but consequently it was easy to understand and agree with. The simplicity makes it very straight forward in that it presents you with a pro-health side, a pro-entertainment side, and those whom are on the fence. I like that you included a short reasoning in parentheses next to each stakeholder. This strengthens your argument and makes it more credible with information to support it. I personally feel that your map was very effective and well done.

  10. I like the use of the Venn diagram as it shows a portion where both circles come together and both sides can agree on certain things. I also like the topic choice because I personally was thinking of using this and believe it can be written up into a great essay and you seem very into it which is also good.

  11. Your choice in the Venn diagram as a stakeholder map I think is very effective because it allows you to compare and contrast both sides of the topic. Since you chose the topic partly because you want to become a doctor, I think that you will be able to write a good essay because it is something that interests you and that you can relate to. Overall I think your stakeholder map is very organized and easy to follow.
