Lethal Injection is one of the most controversial topics in
America today. Over the last century,
Americans have witnessed a dramatic change in the way the death penalty is
applied to criminals, some of these ways include: Death by firing squad,
hanging, and electrocution. In the 19th
and early 20th centuries hanging was the most popular way to
kill a
criminal, nowadays we hear the term, “Lethal Injection” and know that
means
“Death Penalty.” I have devised a map of
who is for lethal injection, who is against, and also the effects and
the
affected. This is a tricky subject
considering not only controversial, but also ironic. The murderer is
put to death by lethal
injection, and the mothers of the original victims sometimes do not want
the
criminal to be put to death but rather locked up in a cage. Being in
the Marine Corps, thus having a
different culture than most, I see no problem with the death penalty,
but I do
understand the controversial use of lethal injection. How do we know it
is painless? What exactly makes it more humane than other
forms of sentencing? What qualifies use
of the lethal injection. In the military
we have only one cause for the death penalty, which is only by lethal
injection
now, and that is desertion during a time of war. That is THE ONLY time
anyone can be put to
death amongst America’s “tough guys.”
There are two types of lethal injection, the three drug
process and the single drug, both of which have the same outcome J. The three drug uses a narcotic (anesthetic)
followed by two more drugs that stop the heart from pumping. The single dose is actually just a large dose
of anesthetics. In all reality while
making this map I am leaning toward more of a “For” lethal injection rather
than opposed. The criminal gets high and
dies stupid, like many Americans today will do on their own anyway. If it was just the separate injections that
follow the narcotics then maybe I would be opposed but the criminal is going to
die feeling better than ever. I do think
that this punishment is sort of humiliating because the victim’s family are
some of the few allowed to view. Do the
courts automatically assume that vengeance is found by watching someone
die?
I find your opinion on lethal injection pretty interesting. Your map is pretty clear and well organized. There a lot of deeper questions that come out of this one topic and you seem to have included all of them. The groups you have in the for/against sections cover a large spectrum of people and it would be interesting to see the perspective of each. Like I said, there are a lot of intriguing questions to answer and it seems like a really good idea for a project.

Just as Brennan said, I find your opinion interesting as well. Being able to locate a position on your map, and seeing that it is accurate to myself leads me to believe that it is in most accurate for others as well. Overall a good job linking those for and opposed to lethal injection. Being a right winged conservative, as you have listed as "for" on your map, I do indeed usually count myself as in favor of capital punishment, as long as we are doing it effectively and within reasonable economic bounds (as I find our economy to be our most vital issue as a country in the first place). I personally believe that in order to keep criminals in line, we mustn’t go easy on those who truly deserve to repay their sins and crimes in full.
ReplyDeleteAs Brennan and David said, I also find your opinion very interesting. I think you did a good job in finding a more specific part of the stakeholders in the argument and were able to analyze them to create the map. Although I believe that criminals need to pay for what they did, I understand your point on it being humiliating. Overall, I think you stakeholders map accurately points out the stakeholders in the argument.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to agree with everyone else. You've incorporated a well thought out analysis of both sides rather than just one. I more specifically agree with Brennan. A lot of different questions arise when analyzing this concept. Things such as cost efficiency and the ethics that come into question, but you have addressed all of them. I think you should begin answering those questions for your project. Someone else made this same sort of map but more specifically analyzed the cost efficiency of the lethal injections. Maybe you can get some ideas from there that can help you delve into your question of cost efficiency.
ReplyDeleteLethal injection is something I have always seen as the most humane way to kill someone on death row but you’ve brought up a lot of good different viewpoints and has really opened this topic for research. The point that others have brought up about cost efficiency is another big thing that needs to be taken into perspective. By bringing up both sides of this topic you can talk about a lot more and give the pros and cons of each which will make your final outcome much more worthwhile to read.
ReplyDeleteI really liked all the different viewpoints you brought up in discussing lethal injection. It was easy to tell from your map who would be for and against this specific topic. I think something that would be beneficial to your map would be to go more in-detail with the stakeholders. I think it was really effective that you stated the effects of lethal injection and also whom it affects. You make a very interesting point bringing up lethal injection and if it’s more humane than living life in prison. I think you made a lot of good points and I agree with all of the stakeholders present in your map.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you! I really like the questions you presented as well, it does bring up some interesting points. I am doing my essay on lethal injection as well and it is obviously so controversial. Your map looks really good because you have brought up many different viewpoints even though you are leaning more towards the for side of the spectrum.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with what everyone has stated before. One thing that should be taken into consideration is the costs and outcome. What if someone is given too little and they are barely conscious and suffering? While I doubt this happens, it is something that should be considered. You brought up both sides of lethal injection and your map clearly states who is for and against this process.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you organized your map. This is such a controversial topic and so it is good that you brought in both sides to the argument. I think utilizing the pros and cons of lethal injection will help you answer your question "what is probable cause of "death"" and give you support to back up your argument in your essay.
ReplyDeleteYou seem to hold a strong opinion regarding lethal injection and the death penalty, and the fact that being a marine has made you very pro death-penalty is interesting. Your stakeholders map is organized, and appears to be well thought out. I especially like that you included some questions for people to ask themselves, which allows for others to become more involved in your argument. Overall, I feel that you were very creative with your stakeholders map and put some effort into it.
