My documentary journey thus far has
been a bit difficult. I originally planned on interviewing my mom, but
considering the fact that I don’t see her often made it difficult for me to
schedule times to shoot action shots or to gather any extra interview footage I
might have wanted to use. Therefore, I decided to change my interview subject.
I am now interviewing my close friend, Alex, who is an identical twin. I
interviewed her on what it’s like being a twin and how it has affected her
life. An example of an action shot I captured of her was of her looking through
her baby pictures of her and her twin. She was sat on the couch looking at
pictures and reminiscing on her childhood as she grew up with an identical
twin. I have definitely gotten enough footage and action shots to put together
a 2-4 minute documentary. So far, I haven’t had any filming issues, other than
the lighting of the action shots not matching up with the interview lighting.
Although I think that I have enough footage, I would like to get more action
shots and/or b-roll footage. One example of b-roll footage I’ve gotten is
photographs of my subject and her twin when they were younger. I’ve learned a
lot not only about my subject, but also about how documentaries work and how
they are put together. I’m still a little confused on how I’m going to put
together my documentary and how I’m going to edit the footage to make the
transitions between clips smooth. Overall, I feel like I’m getting the hang of
how to film documentaries and how to put them together.
